What a great first week! All of our classes started off with a bang this week and by Friday all of our kinks had been worked out and our projects on their way! Our open house is August 18th and I hope to see all our students and families. We've got some great projects coming out of the room this week so while you're meeting grade level teachers also take a moment to see some color exploration by all our grades along with some awesome graffiti and "pieces of me" projects that support our classroom theme this year of social justice through street art.

Welcome back to all our returning kids and all our new students! If I missed you at popsicles on the patio worry not, your student will be bringing home a get to know me form along with going over a syllabus in class that they should discuss with you later on during some free time. All students with the exception of band and choir will rotate through art this year so it should be an exciting and fun year exploring a large variety of art and cross curricular topics. We are still focusing on research as our connection to other academics and will be working closely with Mrs. Brooks to explore resources in our library. Please stay turned parents for announcements regarding our displays that coincide with school events this year. We are also still focusing on our "heART- ful" theme this year but have added a new title to our room; Renegades, Rebels and Mavericks of Knowledge, encouraging our students to fully explore creativity as a process and not just a product in all their classes! See everyone soon!
This year we're really trying to establish meaningful themes in our classrooms and so I introduce you to our official theme….The HeARTful Art Room! More information about our program and classroom to come closer to the start of the school year.
Please visit our Donors Choose website in order to help us get some really awesome and helpful technology in the art room and for our other fine arts teachers to utilize. Students use technology daily in order to conduct research in various forms and for image resources. This technology will go a long ways to connecting students to other parts of the world and through art.
please visit and share: http://www.donorschoose.org/theheartfulartroom?rf=page-siteshare-2015-05-teacher_profile-teacher_2932456 Congratulations on another fantastic year to both our parents and our students! We've achieved a lot these past 2 years including the start of our fine arts department with Drama, Chorus, Art and Band and 5 of our 8th graders being accepted to Nashville School of the arts. Our first art show will be this Thursday, May, 14, from 5-7pm with the talent show following.
With summer break fast approaching I want to encourage all our students, but especially our 7th and 8th graders to keep working on their sketchbooks which can greatly help improve creativity and technical skills such as the value scale and creating more in depth illustrations. As 7th and 8th graders remember you are required to keep a yearly sketchbook as an active and on going grade. finally I want to thank all our parents and friends who donated their time and any extra materials to our students and classroom. We are always looking for these supplies and can be directly shipped to our school: Attention: Visual Arts Apollo Middle School 631 Richards Road Antioch Tn. 37013 Variety sized containers pencils erasers pencil sharpeners composition books notebooks/ sketchbooks Our trip with 55 middle schoolers and 6 adults plus 2 families was a huge success! Our students were quite possibly the best behaved we could have ever dreamed of and everyone had a blast! Our band and choir competitions were a huge success as well with both programs leaving with several awards high in their categories and our art program learning several new methods in the history of animation and creating a storyboard. Our animation course was fantastic and taught even myself a few things about animating with simple tools such as paper and a pencil and we even had the opportunity to work with an animator in the studio by recreating a beloved character stitch which all students got to take home! This trip went such a long towards building relationships and teaching our students responsibilities. I am so happy to announce that all of our 8th graders who tried out for NSA were accepted into the program and all have decided to attend! This is also in thanks to our local transportation system for having such a great set up for our students who will need to commute. Still waiting on Big Picture to send out their news so stay tuned!
Happy New Years and Happy Holidays to all our readers and families! I wanted to share in our excitement that several of our 8th graders will be interviewing at a local high school with an arts focus in the following weeks! I am so excited for my students and I see this as a huge honor for them, our program and I count myself blessed to have such an amazing group of students with such great talent! Good luck guys and remember your vocab :)
The Heart-ful Teacher Several of our 8th graders have been chosen for our Disney trip over Spring intercession! Sadly the trip isn't quite free so please stay tuned for fundraising (we need 80 kids signed up and guaranteed in order to go).
Thanks for everyone's support!! Love, The Art-ful kids and teacher! We've made it to progress report time already believe it or not. Students should have approximately 3 grades for art as long as no work is missing or there is an excused grade referring to an absence. In regards to low grades (below 85) students are welcome to make the assignment up at home and return for a better grade, however free time during class is rare and limited. I also have very limited supplies for kids to check out. For questions regarding grades as always feel free to contact me.
First 2 weeks were a fantastic start to our school year and time spent in art. I want to thank all the parents who stopped by to say hi at open house, especially any 8th grade families I had the privilege to meet and speak with. It was very encouraging to hear so many great conversations going on with families and related studies teachers, the interest in our school's extra curricular activities and related studies has really grown and it has a great year ahead without a doubt. The site is ready to be explored and I hope everyone finds it helpful and inspiring!
Thanks, The Heart-ful Art Room Students and parents welcome back to school and to Related Studies! Yes you read that correctly, we've gone through a name change! I am so excited this year to be a part of a larger related arts team that now includes; band, choir, technology, strength and conditioning, health, drama and of course art! So just how different is the related arts program this year other than new classes and new faces? Well, as a school we have implemented year long related studies classes for 8th graders, for a better high school and college prep, given 7th graders semester long choices beginning in January and have lengthened our class times in related studies classes for a more in depth approach and introduction to our classes. We have so many great opportunities and possibilities ahead of us this year with all these changes and the constant support from our colleagues and administrators! As a small bit of news, August 21st is open house and would be a great opportunity to come meet our related studies team, their rooms, AND our redesigned art room! After living in the pea green room all last year it was high time for a makeover, so over the summer with some help from my fantastic sidekick (aka sister Miranda) we painted at least half of the throw up green (notice the many names but all still disgusting) with a more eye pleasing and gender friendly dark and light blue that thankfully almost compliments the remaining green. I've also added more instructional materials (aka memes) to our walls to add cheer to even the surliest face ;) Here's a little teaser of what the after looks like: For more information on grade level course work find your grade level at the top of this homepage or contact me for more information. Visit 8th grade's page for information on how the course this year works, a spotlight on individual artworks and important project information throughout the year. Hope you enjoy our little site and have a great school year!

CategoriesMs. LI have been an artist for quite some time, however, I am a fairly new face in the education community. I still enjoy pursuing my own art career in my free time but the majority of my time is spent in the classroom or exploring new creative adventures for students. I love being able to spend my days with such a great group of middle schoolers who are seriously the best at humor! |
